Program Overview
Backcountry touring demands a mix of uphill fitness, strength, balance, and durability that general fitness plans don’t cover. This program gives you a clear, progressive training plan built specifically for the demands of backcountry skiing and splitboarding. The focus is developing strong climbing legs, aerobic capacity, and the stability needed for long days on snow.
Whether you're preparing for your first touring season or looking to level up your winter performance, this program helps you build the fitness and confidence you need for bigger days and more fun turns.
What You’ll Gain
By the end of this program, you will develop:
Stronger climbing endurance for long laps in the skintrack
Efficient aerobic capacity for steady, all-day travel
Improved balance and stability for variable snow and technical terrain
More durable legs and core to reduce fatigue and lower injury risk
Better ski and ride performance through improved strength and control
This program builds the full fitness package required for winter objectives.
How the Training Works
This program follows the Alpine Adaptation Method, a structured, science-backed approach that uses progressive phases and heart rate zone training to support sustainable winter fitness.
Training includes:
Base: Build aerobic capacity, movement skill, and foundational strength for winter travel.
Build: Increase maximum strength, uphill stamina, and steady aerobic volume tailored to climbing on skis or a splitboard.
Specific: Prepare for your season with ski-focused strength, loaded climbs, stability work, and conditioning that carries over directly to skintracks and descents.
Heart rate zone training keeps your intensity controlled, helping you build real endurance while minimizing fatigue and reducing risk of early-season burnout.
